EXAME DE QUALIFICAÇÃO NO PPGJOR COM PARTICIPAÇÃO DO OBIAJOR

A investigadora do OBIAJOR Adriana Gonçalves integrou, esta sexta-feira, 11 de setembro, a banca do exame de qualificação da tese de doutoramento de Francilene de Oliveira Silva, no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Jornalismo da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (PPGJOR/UFSC, Brasil), em modo remoto. A autora da tese, Francilene Silva, realizou uma parte da sua investigação no LabCom e em Portugal, a partir da modalidade de ‘doutorado-sanduiche’. O seu trabalho analisa as transformações provocadas pela IA generativa no jornalismo, com particular atenção às questões de autoridade epistémica e legitimação do conhecimento. A dimensão comparativa entre Portugal e Brasil assume particular relevância no contexto do OBIAJOR, porque permite observar diferentes contextos de adoção da IA e discutir as consequências destas tecnologias para as práticas profissionais além fronteiras. A tese intitulada “Legitimação do conhecimento e autoridade epistémica do jornalismo no contexto da IA generativa: um estudo comparativo entre Brasil e Portugal”, é orientada por Rita de Cássia Romeiro Paulino e tem como coorientador João Canavilhas, investigador principal do OBIAJOR e professor da Universidade da Beira Interior. Da banca examinadora fizeram parte também os professores: Raquel Ritter Longhi PPGJOR/UFSC, Felipe Müller (PPGFil/UFSC) e Ana Regina Rêgo Leal (PPGCOM/UFPI). O tema da tese tem proximidade com as linhas de investigação do OBIAJOR – Observatório de Inteligência Artificial no Jornalismo, que acompanha a utilização da IA nas redações e a forma como os meios de comunicação comunicam estas práticas aos seus públicos. A investigação desenvolvida no âmbito da tese contribui, assim, para o debate sobre os impactos da IA generativa nas práticas jornalísticas e sobre as mudanças que esta tecnologia introduz nos processos de produção, validação e disseminação de informação. A participação de Adriana Gonçalves na banca, juntamente com a coorientação de João Canavilhas, reforça a colaboração científica entre o LabCom e grupos de pesquisa

ARTIGO PUBLICADO: IA E JORNALISMO PÚBLICO NO BRASIL

Acaba de ser publicado o artigo “Inteligência artificial e jornalismo público no Brasil: governação e inovação na EBC” da autoria da investigadora do OBIAJOR Bárbara Biolchi, em parceria com o investigador Fabio Giacomelli, membro do LabCom, na revista brasileira Famecos (PUCRS). O estudo analisa as perceções de 31 profissionais da Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) sobre a incorporação da Inteligência Artificial nas rotinas do jornalismo público. Os resultados mostram uma relação ambivalente com a tecnologia: se, por um lado, existe a necessidade de atualização tecnológica e potencial para qualificar as práticas jornalísticas e ampliar o alcance social da empresa, por outro, persistem resistências associadas à cultura organizacional e à ausência de orientações institucionais claras para o uso da IA. Os autores defendem, por isso, uma governação da inovação crítica e participativa, capaz de conciliar eficiência tecnológica, transparência e responsabilidade editorial com os valores que orientam o serviço público de comunicação. STUDY AT UBI, CONDUCT RESEARCH AT LABCOM

Applications are open until 31 August for the 3rd Cycle in Communication Sciences at the University of Beira Interior (UBI). The programme aims to deepen training in Communication Sciences and contribute to the development of research in the field, enabling professionals to carry out independent scientific research. The PhD programme is linked to the four research groups of LabCom: media studies; journalism studies; culture, identity and memory; and strategic communication. A total of 15 places are available for 2026. Applicants may hold a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences or related fields, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in these areas, provided they have a particularly relevant academic or scientific background. The programme is taught on a daytime basis and offers suitable conditions for the development of research in areas such as media, journalism, strategic communication, advertising and public relations, among others. COMMUNICATION, HUMANS, AND MACHINES: CHALLENGES TO DEMOCRACY AND ETHICS

The 17th International Communication Seminar (SEICOM) will take place from 10 to 12 November at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with the option to participate online. The event aims to promote debate on communication processes and practices, power relations and technologies, considering their social, political and cultural impacts, under the theme “Humans and Machines: Challenges for Democracy and Ethics”. The call for extended abstracts is open until 14 September (abstracts must be no longer than 4,000 characters and comply with ABNT standards). Presentations of selected papers will take place on 11 and 12 November, both via Zoom and in person at the School of Communication, Arts and Design (Famecos/PUCRS). The 17th SEICOM will feature lectures by international researchers: Edmond Doua, from Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Côte d’Ivoire; Fabienne Brugère, from Paris 8 University in France; Letícia Cesarino, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina; and Giselle Beiguelman, from the University of São Paulo. FALL SCHOOL ON AI RESEARCH PRACTICES

The call for proposals is now open for the VI MeLCi Lab Autumn School, dedicated to the theme “Advanced School on AI Research Practice in Media and Communication”, which will take place online, from 10 to 13 November 2026. Organised by CICANT – MeLCi and AISIC Labs at Lusófona University, the initiative aims to bring together PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career researchers interested in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research practices in the field of Communication. The programme combines practical workshops and plenary sessions with international researchers, including: Dennis Nguyen, Utrecht University; Igor Kanižaj, Catholic University of Croatia; Joëlle Swart, University of Groningen; Max Schich, Tallinn University, Estonia; and Petter Törnberg, University of Amsterdam. The Autumn School aims to contribute to the development of skills in the use of AI tools while also encouraging critical reflection on the methodological, ethical and social challenges associated with their use in research. The proposed topics include the use of AI in literature searches, data annotation using language models, transparency in AI-generated results, media literacy, and issues of ethics, equity and inclusion in AI research. Proposals must be submitted by 15 September 2026, in English, which will also be the language of instruction. Applicants must submit an updated Curriculum Vitae, a document describing their PhD or research project, and a motivation letter including a reflection on their perspective on AI and its role in the media. Participation costs €70 for PhD students from Lusófona University/CICANT, €150 for PhD students from other institutions, and €200 for all other participants. CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE 2nd EPEA (UBI)

The call for papers is now open for the II EPEA – International Seminar Public Sphere in the Age of Algorithms, which this year is dedicated to the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Political Communication”. The event is organised by LabCom and will take place online on 10 and 11 December. The seminar will discuss the impacts of AI on the public sphere and political communication, with particular attention to issues such as disinformation, deepfakes, algorithmic literacy, transparency, ethics and accountability in AI systems. The proposed topics also include the transformations brought about by AI in journalistic practices and in agenda-setting and gatekeeping processes, a particularly relevant theme in the context of OBIAJOR. Abstracts may be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish, with a maximum length of 350 words. Each author may submit up to two proposals. The submission deadline is 30 September 2026, with the results expected to be announced on 15 October. More information is available here.
